Asthma Symptoms In Adults

By Jonathan Park

Asthma symptoms are the same in adults and children. After all, it is still asthma. While symptoms are similar, the severity is different. Also, what may be felt as mild discomfort to an adult may be felt as intense by a child. For this reason, the symptoms in children are monitored closely by guardians and parents as per instructions from their doctors. Adults, on the other hand, may ignore the symptoms whenever appropriate.

Make no mistake, early detection and prevention is important if you want to achieve long term relief and greater control over your condition. In order to do this you will need to be able to determine the symptoms that asthma can inhibit so that preventive action can be taken immediately. Here are some of the symptoms that you might or might not be aware of:

Shortness of breath (dyspnea): Shortness of breath is the number one source of distress for asthmatic patients and the severity of this symptom does not always reflect the degree of impairment in lung functionality. Taking the previous statement into consideration it would then be possible to experience a very mild shortness of breath and still end up immobilized due to a severe asthma attack or vice versa. If you start experiencing shortness of breath pay more attention as you might need your medication more than you think.

Coughing: Coughing is pretty generic. It can be due to flu, colds, or any other illness so it is easily mistaken for an impending exacerbation of their asthma. If you are experiencing dry and unproductive cough that worsens during colder days, do not ignore it as your body may already be telling you something.

Sleep apnea: Sleep apnea is a chronic condition characterized by pauses and/or shallow breathing during slumber. It is a random visitor and it is hard to tell if its presence indicates something. Shallow breathing is the result of constricting airways when prevent free flow of air. If you start experiencing this symptom, inform your doctor as soon as possible since there may be other reasons that you have it.

Chest tightness or pain: If you start to feel chest tightness or pain during activities or for no particular reason, take your asthma medication and notify someone immediately as it can be an early indication of a serious attack.

When you encounter these symptoms, take action immediately so as to prevent the worsening of your asthma. Do not take a blind leap of faith by waiting to see if the symptoms really are of asthmatic nature. Doing so will stretch the road between you and your much-desired long term relief from asthma. - 31822
